What Bariatric Of Alabama Can Do For You

By Tonia Merritt

When someone is obese they may well need bariatric of Alabama, which is essentially bariatric surgery to the stomach of overweight people. Its aim is to reduce their intake of food by making sure the overweight person eats less, and therefore loses weight.

The effect this has on the weight of the obese is said to be nothing short of profound. The method is said to promote increased life expectancy and a reduced risk from diabetes and even heart problems, the latter of which can often be linked to the severely overweight. Apparently the mortality rate of senior citizens is not affected by the surgery, although people are not sure why not.

The procedure has been recommended by the US National Institutes of Health as a way for obese people, those with a body mass index - also known as BMI - of at least forty, to lose weight. The treatment may be given to patients as an option if they have failed a diet and exercise program and if they have other, obesity-related conditions, such as impaired glucose intolerance or obstructive sleep apnea.

People that balk at the idea of having major surgery on their stomach can opt for a gastric band. It is attached to the stomach and limits the amount of food that can be ingested into the gut. The other way is to have a gastric sleeve, which is the surgical removal of part of the stomach, with what's left being stapled and perhaps sutured together. The term gastric sleeve comes from the finished product's resemblance to a tube or sleeve. There is no turning back from this as it is a permanent procedure.

Due to the various improvements in methods of helping obese patients, some can expect to lose between thirty and fifty per cent of their body fat during a 6-12 month span. The beauty behind the method is that the function of the stomach is not normally affected, meaning it allows for the consumption of most types of foods, just in smaller amounts than patients were previously used to.

The procedure does of course come with risks, as does all major surgery. It has been reported that some people have had diarrhea and experienced bloating right after they have eaten. It should be remembered that most people tend not to have any complications. However, it has been suggested that when experienced surgeons operate the risks of complications are reduced.

After the surgery there comes the issue of what should be eaten. Because of this the 'gastric bypass diet' was born. It is apparently a diet for those who have had surgery, and allows them to digest food safely and comfortably while they get used to their new stomachs. Asking a medical doctor about this is the best way to go.

Bariatric of Alabama involves the usual methods of bariatric surgery such as the gastric band and the gastric sleeve. While exercise and eating a healthy diet do work for some, there are others who will need to take the surgical procedure route.
