Raising Testosterone Levels With Chrysin Creams And Supplements

By John Mulder

The chemical compound chrysin is naturally found in several plants, including two types of passion flowers, chamomile and the Indian trumpetflower. Smalls amounts are also present in the Pleurotus ostreatus, a type of mushroom as well as honeycomb. Extractions of this substance from these various sources are used to medically treat anxiety and inflammation. They are also added to fitness supplements, weightlifting supplements and bodybuilding supplements.

People who are into bodybuilding are especially interested in this substance because it has shown an ability to act as an anti-aromatase inhibitor in various in vitro studies. The human body uses aromatase for the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. This conversion takes place in fat tissues, the brain, and the liver using aromatase produced by the liver.

By inhibiting aromatase, the body experiences higher amounts of testosterone and lower estrogen levels. Males between 30 and 40 years of age begin to experience a decline in testosterone. To remain youthful, many men look for effective ways to increase testosterone levels and suppress estrogen production.

Lower testosterone levels are caused by a variety of factors. An increase in aromatase enzyme activity is one of them. Aromatase depletes available testosterone and increases circulating estrogen levels. The brain reacts to the estrogen by decreasing production of testosterone. This negative feedback loop leads to an imbalance in sex hormone ratios.

When estrogen is available in higher amounts it leads to increased amounts of sex hormone binding globulin, otherwise known as SHBG. Testosterone binds to the SHBG and decreases its availability even more. This causes an imbalance in sex hormones and the individual experiences a loss of energy, increased body fat, and decreased strength due to a loss of muscle mass.

Many individuals who lift weights will take testosterone supplements to restore balance, which improves strength and muscle size. At the same time, there is an increase in muscle tone. If the individual is experiencing excessive aromatization, the best way to achieve the same effect is to inhibit the action of aromatase.

Because chrysin is water insoluble, the intestine does not readily absorb it and it takes large doses to see its effects on testosterone levels. Some studies show that the effect is stronger when taken with piperine but the dosage must still be high. Many bodybuilders prefer to use chrysin cream instead. In this form, the chemical is effective in dosages of one-tenth of what it takes when ingested orally. The chrysin in creams bypasses the stomach and liver, minimizing degradation and making it more readily available.
